Jon Smyth’s “The Hijack of Boeing One” has been researched and written over the past 19years (you can learn more about Boeing One and the mystery of its disappearance HERE). The book began in 1988 as a ‘coffee table’ photo dominated book concept covering the production of British Film maker John Earnshaw’s “The Search for Boeing One” documentary. The book was supposed to be ready for publication in 1990 however subsequent events overtook this plan.
In 1989, in spite of three contracts Earnshaw had signed in good faith with the New Zealand Government to facilitate the search for Boeing One and the filming of his documentary, a recurring cycle of curious frustrations began that, in 1992, finally strangled the Search For Boeing One documentary production.
By this time it had become clear that the original book concept had become irrelevant. Smyth began to follow the curious events that were now unfolding. Some of these events pointed to an envy and spite driven campaign by parties within the New Zealand Government to usurp Earnshaw’s project and salvage contract - while other evidence pointed to an agenda of deliberate subversion and frustration of all attempts to open and investigate sealed off tunnels at the old military base at North Head where the first Boeing is said to have been entombed. This agenda appeared to date back to 1961. The question was: why?
In 1994 the controversy boiled over into litigation at the Aucklnand high court that was not resolved until 2003 when a judgment handed down by Chief Justice Sian Elais defied natural justice and posed more questions than it answered. Since then Smyth has been sorting and cataloguing two decades of research on what actually happened to the first Boeing and why every search for it has been abandoned or otherwise terminated incomplete leaving more questions than answers...
